Purpose
In order to model the rate of water flow of the outlet, the dimension of the hole of the model is needed to be based on the scale from the actual rate in the reservoir. Given the information that the submersible propeller axial flow pump has the capacity of 4 cubic meter per second, this number is converted to the scale of the model, which is 0.05 cubic meter per second. The purpose of this experiment is to figure out the dimension of a hole, that will be multiplied by five and has flow rate of 0.05 cubic meter per second.
Apparatus
Variable
- Dependent variable: Volume of water flow through the hole after 10 seconds
- Independent variable: The size of hole on a bottle
- Controlled variable:
- Type of bottle
- Size of bottle
- Volume of water added to the bottle
- Time period for water flow
- Type of bottle
Method
- Use a marker and ruler to draw a rectangular hole on a bottle
- The dimension of a hole is 1 cm. X 1 cm. (width and length respectively)
- Use a cutter to cut the surface of the bottle (5 cm. from the bottom)
- Fill up the bottle with water (the hole covered with hand)
- Place the bottle upright 90 degree above 1000 ml. Beaker
- Start measuring the flow rate of water from the bottle to the beaker for 10 seconds using timer
- By letting the water flow from the bottle to the below beaker
- Try to remove the thumb to let the water flow after start timing as soon as possible
- Remove the bottle after 10 seconds of water flowing
- By letting the water flow from the bottle to the below beaker
- Measure the water flow out of the bottle
- Pour the water from 1000 ml.beaker to 250 ml.graduate cylinder to measure the volume of water
- Use 250 ml. Graduate cylinder for accuracy
- Record the data as a unit of cubic centimeter per second
- Pour the water from 1000 ml.beaker to 250 ml.graduate cylinder to measure the volume of water
- Repeat step 6-7 for three trials (for each size)
- Repeat step 1-8 for the other six different dimension
