Background information
Bueng Nong Bon is a water reservoir in the eastern part of Bangkok. This man-made reservoir plays a major role to control the flood problem in the southeast districts of Bangkok. This project was initiated by the King Rama IX of Thailand to prevent flood problem in this area. Because Prakhanong, Prawet and Srinakarin are low area of eastern Bangkok, also a water pathway from the downtown to Chao Praya river. Therefore, during rainy reason, these areas are inevitably filled with rainwater, causing flooding and many more problems. In 1983, King Bhumipol presented the solutions for the flooding problem including this project, Bung Nong Bon reservoir. The main purpose of this reservoir is to store water from many Klongs before releasing the water to the Klongs and the river, during rainy season. The ability of containing 5 cubic meter in total of this reservoir helps alleviate the water problem in the area.
The main goal of this reservoir is to temporarily store a rainwater and also used as a wastewater treatment during dry season. The maximum rate of storage in Bung Nong Bon can store an excessive rainwater from a broad area, approximately 150 square meter for five years in total. This capacity plays a role in improving the drainage of water from many area. Additionally, in order to manage the water flow into the reservoir during dry season, the drainage system of Bung Nong Bon manages the water level within the reservoir to be lower than the level in Klongs. During rainy season, they will lower the water level in the reservoir around 2-5 meters to prepare for the drainage of water from the downtown area and Klongs. The maximum volume of excessive water that this reservoir receives can be up to 4 million cubic meter, which would be from 40-50 square meter of the area for five years. There are many extensive benefits from this man made reservoir, for instance, alleviating the flooding problem, storing excessive rainwater, treating the wastewater in Klong Nong Bong and Klong MaKham, increasing a green area and water retention park, and reducing the budget of wastewater treatment in Klongs.
